Amidst all the shiny new social platforms, email continues to hold its own.

It remains the best marketing channel in terms of return on investment and outshines even the giants of Facebook and Tiktok when it comes to personalisation.

Email is a fantastic way to connect with your community, and the best part is that you remain in control of the entire process.

With all these benefits, it makes sense to grow your email list to help grow your business.


But, how do you actually get the right people on your email list?


Luckily, there are many simple and effective ways to encourage people to join your email community. Let’s look at some of the best.

Offer A Lead Magnet

People don’t tend to hand over their email addresses freely these days. We all like our privacy and don’t want to be swamped with offers and promotions. However, most of us are happy to share it if we get something great in return.

One of the best ways to grow your email list is to offer people something valuable.
This could be

  • an eBook
  • an informative PDF
  • a useful template
  • or even a free webinar or course.

Run A Promotion Or Discount

Everyone loves a bargain, so why not offer a discount or promotion to new email subscribers?

Entice subscribers to your list with a great deal. Consider a discount code offering 10 or 20% off the first purchase or free shipping for every sign-up.

Host A Competition

Competitions are a fantastic way to grow your email list. If you have a brick and mortar location, you could set up a raffle and have people write down their email addresses.

Even if you don’t have a brick and mortar business, you can also run a competition or giveaway online using a simple opt-in form. Just make sure that everyone who enters is aware that in doing so, they’ll be opting in to receive your emails.

Run A Survey Or Quiz

Make the sign-up process more enticing by running a survey or a quiz for your audience. Ask your audience for their opinion via a survey, and collect their names and email addresses in the process. You’ll score the double bonus of getting to know your customers better and growing your email list.

Alternatively, you could create a fun quiz to engage people. Personality or archetype style quizzes are super popular. Have people complete the questions through your website or a quiz app and collect their email addresses to send them the results.

Create Irresistible Content

While it’s a nice feeling to grow your list, you want to make sure you keep your subscribers engaged and entertained by offering excellent email content. Don’t just spam them with marketing emails. Instead, create valuable, interesting, relevant and personalised content such as tips, how-tos, links, faqs, and more.

Be Strategic With Your CTAs

Nobody will subscribe to your emails if they don’t know about them, so make sure you provide plenty of opportunities for your audience to sign up.

Use pop-ups on your website and add a sign-up link to your email signature. The more you can share a CTA to sign-up, the bigger you can grow your email list.

Instead of a basic sign-up page, consider creating a more detailed landing page outlining what people can expect from signing up to your email newsletter.

Utilise Your Social Networks

Your social platforms are a great place to draw attention to your email list. You can add a call to action button to the top of your Facebook Business page or add a CTA to your YouTube videos and descriptions.

On Instagram, put a CTA and link to a sign-up form in your bio or use the link feature to send people to a landing page from your stories.

Aside from sharing CTAs on your socials, you can give people sneak peeks of email newsletter content or share the newsletters themselves so your audience can see the value in subscribing.

Make Your Email Shareable

Make it easier for your current subscribers to share your emails by adding a “Forward to a Friend” CTA in your emails. This will encourage your community to share any content they find useful and engaging. You could even include a custom link that enables recipients to share your email content on their social channels.

Having people share your content is a great way to increase brand awareness, but make sure you build in a way for the people it’s shared with to sign up to your list, too: a simple text-based “Subscribe” CTA at the bottom of your emails should do the trick.
